March 21, 2016

On behalf of myself, General Secretary-Treasurer Armand E. Sabitoni, and the entire General Executive Board, it is with great sadness that I announce the passing of Vere O. Haynes and offer heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and his many union brothers and sisters.

Vere was a Laborers’ Laborer and a true trade unionist, who fought tirelessly to improve the lives of the men and women of LIUNA. From his first days organizing health care workers in the 1960s in New England and through more than 50 years of service in the home health care industry, Vere has been a champion for justice.

He was taken from us too suddenly and his death is a loss to LIUNA and the labor movement. Vere was not only a defender of the workers he represented, he was also an integral member of the LIUNA General Executive Board for decades. He approached every issue with a kindness, collegiality, and team spirit, which will be sorely missed.

While we are all saddened by Vere’s untimely death, he will be remembered for his commitment to his community and he will live on in the hearts he touched and with the working men and women whose lives he improved.

Vere was a credit to his family, his union and the entire labor movement and I am proud to have called him my friend and my brother.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 24, 2016, at the Hopewell Baptist Church, 280 Windsor Avenue, Windsor, Connecticut 06095, telephone 860-522-4321. Viewing hours are planned for 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., with the funeral service to begin immediately following.

Expressions of sympathy may be sent to Mrs. Helen Haynes at her home:
