from the Business Manager – Great Job Everyone!

To all City of Chicago Residents,

Chicago has experienced some very cold weather over the last few days, including a record breaking -11°F for January 23, with windchills as low as -36°F. Countless businesses and schools across the City were closed on Friday due to the extremely low temperatures.

One thing many people don’t know, or notice, is the men and women of LiUNA Local 1001 were out there doing what they do each and every day, on the streets, in the alleys, at the airports, in the Loop, everywhere our Laborers’ work they showed up as they always do and kept the frigid cold City running.

These are the City workers that we keep hearing may be subject to a future layoff due to a budget shortfall. These are the men and women who braved the insane wind chills over the last several days to service the City of Chicago. My response to the layoff rumors, and that’s all they are, is stop with the threats. Your Budget has been short every year you have been in office, and since you were out voted this time you want to punish the people who keep our City running. Look somewhere else. The members of LiUNA 1001 pay their fines and water bills or they get disciplined, the members of LiUNA come to work in the extreme cold and the extreme heat, there are no “closed” days for them.

The members of LiUNA 1001 are not looked at as first responders but they are out in the elements when everyone else is sitting in a nice warm office or working from home.

Here’s a simple question for everyone, were all your City services that the Laborers’ perform completed at the end of this week? The answer is YES! They came to work, they did the work, and they should be respected and recognized for the great work they do each and every day.

As a City taxpayer, a life-long City resident and a proud member of LiUNA Local 1001, I want to personally say Thank You to all of the men and women of Local 1001 who really stepped up this week.

Great work everyone, We’re Stronger Together, We’re Union and We Ain’t Going Nowhere!
